The Month Of May Broke 8 Global Temperature Records In A Row

Last month- May broke the eighth consecutive global temperature making it the eighth month in a row to break the monthly temperature record, according to NASA. With global temperatures on the rise this accolade is sadly a not surprising one.

NASA just released temperature data and it looks like this year will be hottest year on record, beating out last year as the hottest to date. The trends of temperature increases are only becoming more rapid.  They found that May was 0.93°C (1.67°F) warmer that the 1951-1980 average, sparking fear that this year will also beat the 2012 record of the most Arctic ice melt. Greenland’s glaciers have been melting at a record pace, and sea ice is at an all time low.

The average global temperature sits at around 1°C (1.6°F) hotter, but interestingly enough different parts of the world are warming up at different rates. For example Finland is averaging temperatures that are around 3 and 4°C (5.4 and 7.2°F) warmer. But according to the NOAA, Alaska is in even worse shape averaging 10°C (16°F) above average temperatures.

The Director of Geneva’s World Climate Research Programme has said: “The state of the climate so far this year gives us much cause for alarm. The super El Niño is only partly to blame. Abnormal is the new normal.”

How this temperature increase will affect the worlds rhythm is still unknown, but its going to jumble things a pretty good amount. It is difficult to fully understand how to curb these spikes in temperature, but if we don’t do something soon, it will be too late. We need to go against our human nature of not doing things until the last minute, and get to work to solving this global crisis.
