BEAUTIFY COMMUNITIESAmericans produce over 200 million tons of garbage each year. We organize active clean-up efforts and city beautification projects to help curb the growing problem.

Timelapse of a plant dancingThis is the Calathea Lancifolia also known as a rattlesnake. It has a habit of folding its leaves at night, either upward or downward, a phenomenon called nyctinasty. It’s actually very common in some plant families, such as the legume family and others. This kind of movement is caused by a hinge-like structure at the base of the leaf called the pulvinus that is filled with water during the day, but drains at night, so that the resulting lack of turgor causes the leaf to fold. It’s fun to watch. Some believe that plants change the angle of their leaves to help funnel dew drops and overnight rain down the trunk to the stem and roots. Another hypothesis is that it’s to keep water from pooling in the leaves which can promote bacterial or fungal growth. Learn more at greenism.com we are always posting new things on greenism .
